Lets Get Into It

Today was an odds and ends day. I was able to take the afternoon and just bop around a bit. I was interested in looking at some vintage glass, but my normal haunt was out of Canon FD lenses. Someone cleaned them out as a few weeks ago they had about twenty lenses on offer. I ended up looking at a Sigma Art 12-24mm f4 lens. I was astounded at how impractical that lens would be. Most of my shooting is on the Canon R6 and M6 Mark II; I was just imagining using this on the M6II. The lens weighs roughly three times as much as the camera, and the M6II ergonomics are such that it works great with small Canon EF-M lenses, but when I stick a large lens on there, the balance negatively impacts the shooting experience. Even on the R6, this beast of a lens would not work in my "hand held" world. This would be a great lens for the right moment. I don't know that it does enough above and beyond the Canon EF-M 11-22 to justify the weight for my use. I know it's there if I need it someday now, and I know what it's like. That said, Nikon has a faster super-wide zoom, and I'm always looking for an excuse to buy more Nikon glass.

So why did I call this an "odds and ends" kid of day? I picked up a small cache of Peak Design gear including their backpack clip, a few of their Arca/Manfrotto RC2 plates that are compatible with the clip, a strap they call a "Sling", and more of their anchors. I have been impressed with their anchors, the wrist strap they offer works well as a wrist strap, but the ability to use it as basically a bracelet when not in use is not an "all the time" proposition. The magnets come loose too often in normal wear to use it in an "everyday carry" mode. Wear the strap when shooting, and otherwise, leave it in the bag. Fiddling with it all day long in normal life is too much of a hassle, no matter how much you shoot. I considered adding a few Manfrotto quick release ballheads to the bag, but it just started to feel more like I was investing than shopping. Mostly, I kind of like my Sirui (the best source for a pronunciation I've hear so far is soo-ray) 3T-35R table top/vlogging tripod, but I hate the non quick-release ball head. Give me QR or give me death, so the saying goes.
